Below is a checklist for what you will need to complete in our first week of remote learning! Remember, all items can be found and submitted on Google Classroom.
Hello Everyone and Happy April! Please watch the below video that shows you how to access our remote learning sites! A few notes, I made this video on Monday. On Tuesday, the county announced the addition of live classes. My class will still be set up the same way in terms of work process, etc, however I will also be hosing the live classes during the designated times that were sent out in the message from Mr. Mares. If you didn't see it, here it is: First Period: Monday & Wednesday @8:30 a.m. Second Period: Monday & Wednesday @10:00 a.m. Fourth Period: Tuesday & Thursday @ 10: a.m. Check your Google Classroom page for the meeting links! Second note, in the video I say that each week there will be three components in your lesson: Notes, Informational Text APES Practice, Short Story & Discussion Board. This is true for the first week, however, some weeks, there may be two short stories and/or there may be an activity in lieu of a discussion board. I will make all of this clear at the beginning of the week on the work checklist the I place on my website. Also, if you have questions...just ask! I'm here to help you :). I know things might not be totally perfect as we make this transition into remote learning, but ask questions, communicate if/when you are unsure or confused, and we will do this together!! Ok...enough yammering...please watch the video sometime before we start our remote learning on April 13! Good Morning Everyone!
I hope your families are safe and well and that you are practicing your social distancing. I know we are in some uncertain times and I want you to know that the first priority now is your health and your family. I've had a lot of questions about classwork, if there are assignments that can be done over this hiatus from school, and things like that. So here's the deal. WCPSS has directed all teachers to not assign or collect any work at this time. However, you have most likely seen the email from WCPSS central office that contained supplemental materials for you to view while you are out of school. You are welcome to take a look at and use those materials as you like. Below, I am providing some other ideas for materials or things that you can do while we are out. Keep in mind, these are simply ides and are NOT items that will be collected or graded in any way. 1. READ, READ, READ I know it seems to simple to be effective, but multiple educational studies have shown that reading keeps the brain sharp and is the BEST way to improve student literacy. What's better, you can read literally ANYTHING to get the benefits of reading. This includes graphic novels, ESPN.com, your favorite sci-fi series...anything. If you don't have access to anything you'd like to read at home right now, you can STILL check out e-books from the Wake County Public Library. WCPL also has a TON of audiobooks that you can download and listen to. Audiobooks are great because you can listen while you do other things. Simply log in here using your library card and start browsing. If you don't have an account or can't remember if you do, you can set up a new account here as well. If you plan to read the books on your phone or tablet, you may want to download the Overdrive app from the app store. This app provides a good e-reader and plays nicely with the Wake County Public Library site. Also, it's free! Once you've downloaded the app, you'll just need to connect it to WCPL. If you're looking for ideas for books to read, I use the goodreads app. It's free to download and can give you LOTS of suggestions in all sorts of genres. You can also connect with friends and see what they've read and liked! I've also opened up the readers corner section of my page that has a selection of books I've read and enjoyed. Most of these are from a few years ago, but I'll be updating the content. You can read my reviews and see if there is anything in there that sparks your interest. 2. CommonLit You all set up a CommonLit Account at the beginning of the semester. Great news, with your student accounts, you have access to a TON of great passages - short stories, non-fiction, and poetry. All the passages are followed by multiple choice and short answer questions. These are GREAT practice for APES, SAT/ACT, and AP tests. You can browse the library in CommonLit and select passages that interest you, just click the library tab at the top once you've logged in. Check the grade level that the passage is suggested for to make sure you aren't choosing something geared toward elementary school students. Otherwise, you're all set! If you've forgotten your CommonLit username, you can click the "I forgot" link to help retrieve your username, or send me an email. 3. Journaling Take 10-20 minutes every day to log your thoughts, your feelings -- anything and everything goes. You can keep your journal on a running Google Doc. Lots of students keep diaries during historically significant times (which we most certainly are in). Here's a documentary on children who kept diaries during the Holocaust if you'd like to view this (we usually watch this in class when we read Night). 4. Documentaries Speaking of documentaries, they are a great way to learn about a subject that interests you. There are tons of documentaries on Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, the History Channel, and the National Geographic Channel. Great thing about this idea is tht you can make this social (while distancing). Watch a documentary with your family OR call/text a friend and have them watch the same documentary at their OWN HOME. Then you can talk with your family OR set up a Google Hangout/Facetime to discuss what you learned. What surprised you, what did you already know, what questions do you still have, what aspect of this do you want to know more about? These are all great starting points. If you want to go deeper, consider the perspective from which this documentary is told, what are the inherent biases, what was NOT included vs. what WAS included (this can direct you to the bias/perspective)? 2nd & 4th Period - One last note on your STEM Research Project. Hopefully you all got this email from Mr. Barry, but if you did not, I'm copying what he said in his email regarding your STEM projects. From Mr. Barry: "Class Projects - with everything going on I am essentially placing a pause on the Class Projects currently being worked on. Given the level of collaboration required, I do not think it is fair to assume that all students will be able to communicate to the level needed while outside of school" So, with that being said - at this time DO NOT WORRY about your STEM research projects. We will cross that bridge if/when we get there. Ok, y'all, that's it for now. Take care of yourselves!! ~Mrs. Shelow Tuesday
